Britons are on the brink of a significant storm with 85mph winds set to sweep through the entire country, according to the latest weather forecasts. The nation is preparing for powerful gales on Tuesday, with yellow weather alerts issued ahead of the expected severe weather conditions. Ventusky weather projections indicate that wind speeds could reach 85mph in areas such as west Wales, the South West, and Cumbria by noon.
Northern Ireland is expected to face winds ranging from 50mph to 60mph, while much of England is bracing for 40mph winds. Scotland, for the most part, will escape the worst of the storm, although regions like south-west Scotland, north-west Scotland, and parts of the Highlands may experience winds between 45mph and 70mph.
The weather maps suggest that wind speeds will escalate, with north Wales, Cumbria, and southern Scotland potentially experiencing winds of up to 80mph by 3pm. Subsequently, Cumbria and western Scotland could face 70mph winds just three hours later.
By 9pm, conditions are expected to stabilize across most of the country, except for north-west Scotland where 80mph winds are predicted. Yellow wind warnings have been issued for Cornwall, parts of Devon, and western Wales starting from 10pm and lasting until 4pm the next day. Additionally, a yellow rain warning is in effect from 6pm today to 6pm tomorrow for these areas and extending into Somerset and Dorset.
Residents of Lancashire and Cumbria are also advised to heed a yellow rain warning until 3pm the following day. The Met Office has warned of ongoing unsettled weather throughout the week as people prepare for the upcoming Christmas holidays.
Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Holley from the Met Office cautioned about potential flooding and travel disruptions due to the expected heavy rain and strong winds. The weather outlook for December remains uncertain, with more low-pressure systems anticipated to bring wet and windy conditions across the UK.
