Britons have received a caution about the likelihood of flooding this week, with approximately half the usual monthly rainfall expected to hit the country within a few hours. The Met Office has issued a weather warning for heavy rain on Wednesday, with up to 60mm (2.3 inches) predicted to affect areas, particularly in south Wales, parts of the Southwest of England, and the Midlands.
Following heavy rainfall, especially in south Wales on Monday, numerous flood warnings have been issued for the week ahead. The Met Office has advised that a spell of heavy rain, especially over elevated areas, will move eastwards across the region during Wednesday. Given the recent wet conditions, there is a possibility of travel disruptions and flooding, with potential damage to properties. Some communities may also face isolation due to flooded roads.
In a typical December, Swansea usually experiences around 115mm of rainfall, while Cardiff typically sees approximately 140mm, both cities covered by the weather warning. On Wednesday, an expected 60mm of rain is anticipated to fall within a short period, equivalent to half of the average December total. Additionally, heavy rainfall is forecasted for parts of Northwest England, including Cumbria, on Wednesday night, extending eastwards to the East of England by Thursday morning.
The Met Office advises residents to assess the risk of flooding to their properties and prepare a flood plan along with an emergency flood kit. It is recommended to check road conditions, public transport schedules, and make necessary adjustments to travel plans to minimize delays. Adequate preparation for potential power cuts is also urged, including gathering essential items such as torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack.
The Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales have issued numerous flood warnings and alerts, including for the River Towy, isolated properties in south Wales, and other regions like Dawlish Water in Devon and the River Crake Valley in the Lake District. Thursday’s forecast indicates continued wet conditions across southern England, particularly in Wiltshire and Hampshire, following heavy rainfall on Monday in areas such as Saint Athan, Glamorgan, and Plymouth, Devon.
