The United Kingdom is bracing for challenging weather conditions as strong winds are expected to impact various regions today. A polar vortex from a different continent has contributed to a storm heading towards the UK, potentially bringing snowfall to certain areas, particularly in Scotland and the northern parts of England on Friday.
According to a weather specialist cited by The Mirror, wind speeds of up to 85mph could affect parts of the country, ushering in more cold winter weather. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for freezing fog covering Kent, Surrey, West Sussex, and East Sussex in the southeast of England.
Senior meteorologist Jim Dale from British Weather Services confirmed that 85mph winds are forecasted to hit Scotland later tonight, with strong gusts exceeding 50mph expected in Brighton and surrounding regions by 9pm. The weather expert cautioned that snowy conditions will mainly be confined to elevated areas like the southern Highlands and Grampians.
This inclement weather, occurring just a few days into winter, is attributed to extreme conditions thousands of miles away over the Atlantic Ocean. The expert explained that the storm is a result of an active jet stream caused by a Polar Vortex dislocation in the North-Eastern US leading to freezing temperatures and snow.
A triple-dip polar vortex is anticipated to impact the US, making December exceptionally cold across the pond. While the UK may not experience temperatures as extreme as in the US, colder weather is expected. The Met Office highlighted the likelihood of freezing fog developing in southeast England, with travel disruptions possible due to slower journey times and potential delays to transportation services.
