“UK Foreign Office Warns of Jamaica Travel Disruptions After Hurricane Melissa”

The UK Foreign Office has issued a warning for package holiday travelers to Jamaica, as some flights and holiday packages to the Caribbean destination have been paused or canceled following the impact of Hurricane Melissa. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) recently updated travelers on the situation in Jamaica after the hurricane hit the region two weeks ago.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on October 28, causing significant damage to infrastructure, roads, and utilities services across the country. The storm brought heavy rainfall and strong winds, leading to shortages of essential supplies like food and water. Access to healthcare in severely affected areas is also limited, with the Western parishes experiencing substantial damage.

According to the latest reports, Hurricane Melissa resulted in the loss of 45 lives, with 15 individuals still missing. The FCDO advises travelers in Jamaica to exercise caution and adhere to local authorities’ guidance. In case accommodation is not available at your hotel, the FCDO suggests contacting other hotels in the area for potential vacancies.

While all airports in Jamaica have reopened, not all flights are currently operational. Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay is running a limited number of commercial flights as repairs are being carried out. Travelers are advised to check with their airlines for updates on flight schedules, as some operators have halted or altered flights and package holidays to Jamaica in the aftermath of the hurricane.

Before embarking on any travel, the FCDO recommends following its foreign travel checklist, which can be found on the Government website for detailed guidance.
