“UK Health Agency Issues Cold Weather Alert”

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a health advisory for individuals above 65 years old due to an upcoming cold weather episode. Experts warn that the drop in temperatures could pose risks for this age group.

A cold health alert (CHA) has been activated by the UKHSA in specific regions of England, including Yorkshire and Humber, North West, and North East until Saturday, November 22. The rest of England is under a lower-level yellow alert.

According to the UKHSA, the anticipated low temperatures are expected to lead to a surge in healthcare service usage by vulnerable individuals, particularly those aged 65 and older, individuals with existing health conditions like respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and other at-risk groups such as the homeless.

Dr. Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at the UKHSA, emphasized the importance of checking on vulnerable individuals during this cold spell. He highlighted the potential health risks associated with the forecasted temperatures, especially for those over 65 and individuals with pre-existing health issues.

Recent temperature drops in the UK have been noted, with daytime temperatures projected to peak at only five to 10 degrees Celsius in many areas in the coming days.

The Met Office has issued yellow severe weather warnings for Scotland and northern England for today (November 18), with predictions of rain, sleet, snow, and ice in some regions.

The amber cold health alert, part of the weather health alert system jointly established by UKHSA and the Met Office, indicates a prolonged period of cold weather affecting the healthcare system, potentially posing risks to the entire population and other sectors, warranting a coordinated response.

UKHSA guidance advises maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature during cold weather to safeguard health, particularly for individuals with medical conditions or older age.

Simple adjustments like heating your home adequately can help keep you and your living space warm during the chilly weather.
