“UK Mobile Networks Crack Down on Foreign Call Center Scams”

Mobile networks such as BT EE, VodafoneThree, and Virgin Media O2 are set to prevent foreign call centers from posing as banks in a new effort to combat scams. These networks have committed to enhancing their systems over the next year to prevent foreign call centers from spoofing UK numbers.

Scammers utilize technology to spoof their numbers and alter their caller IDs to appear as trusted entities, a practice known as number spoofing. The crackdown aims to clearly indicate when calls originate from overseas. Advanced technologies, including AI and call tracing tools, will be used to detect and block suspicious calls and assist law enforcement in tracking down scammers nationwide.

Leading companies like BT EE, Virgin Media O2, VodafoneThree, Tesco Mobile, Talk Talk, Sky, and Comms Council UK (CCUK) have joined the initiative. Recent data reveals that 96% of mobile users make call-answering decisions based on displayed numbers, with most being hesitant to pick up calls from unknown international numbers.

Lord Hanson, the Minister for Fraud, emphasized the government’s commitment to combatting spoofed calls used by scammers to deceive the public. He highlighted the significant upgrade to the mobile network that will eliminate call spoofing within a year, ultimately making the UK a challenging environment for scammers to operate.

Individuals are encouraged to report scams and fraud to Action Fraud via phone or the Action Fraud website. In Scotland, scam reports can be made through Advice Direct Scotland or Police Scotland. Email scams should be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk, while suspicious text messages can be sent to 7726. Concerns regarding fraudulent websites can be reported to the National Cyber Security Centre.

If receiving suspicious calls, individuals are advised to disconnect and verify the caller’s details online. It is crucial not to call back the provided number and to contact the bank immediately if fraud is suspected. Compromised passwords should be changed promptly to safeguard accounts.
