Athletes are showcasing their talents at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in Corner Brook this week, with a dedicated team of over 300 volunteers in orange shirts ensuring smooth operations behind the scenes.
The transition to the second group of athletes marked Wednesday as a significant day at the Games, with sports activities set to resume in the evening. Duane Huxter, stationed at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, has been diligently organizing merchandise for the athletes, including folding t-shirts for more than a week.
Reflecting on his commitment, Huxter mentioned that what began as a small task turned into days of continuous effort. Volunteers play a vital role in various aspects of the Games, from collaborating with local officials to managing logistics and overseeing venue operations to ensure the success of the event.
Dave Campbell, the games director at SportNL and a member of the host committee, emphasized the importance of community collaboration and volunteer support in executing such events. He acknowledged the significant contributions made by volunteers from Corner Brook and Stephenville.
Despite the challenges of coordinating clothing for multiple teams, Huxter highlighted the rewarding experience of contributing to athletes’ memorable moments. While his involvement in the opening ceremonies was relatively modest, he expressed satisfaction in assisting athletes in giving their best performance.
Huxter shared his pride in seeing athletes proudly donning the colors he meticulously prepared, emphasizing the collective effort of volunteers in creating a positive experience for all participants at the Games.
