University of Waterloo doctoral student Kaveeshan Thurairajah recently received the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for his work on creating a splash-free urinal, a prestigious yet unconventional award. The Ig Nobels, a playful twist on the esteemed Nobel Prizes, recognize unique and creative academic research endeavors.
Thurairajah, along with his team, developed various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia designs, to minimize splashing and enhance cleanliness. The Nautilus design, in particular, stood out for its practicality and ease of maintenance compared to the Cornucopia model.
During the award ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues sported bright yellow raincoats, ready to bask in the admiration of their fellow eccentric scientists. Despite the whimsical nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized the practical benefits of creating more hygienic and inviting public restrooms.
Apart from Thurairajah’s team, other Canadian researchers were also recognized at the event. Notably, a group from the University of Toronto received the Economics Prize for their study on the behavior of upper-class individuals, while McGill University scientists were part of the team that won the Technology Prize for using mosquito proboscises in high-resolution 3D printing.
The Ig Nobel Awards, hosted by the Annals of Improbable Research magazine, relocated to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. due to visa concerns for attendees. Thurairajah highlighted the importance of international collaboration in the scientific community and expressed gratitude for the diverse contributions from researchers worldwide.
