WhatsApp Introduces Usernames to Replace Phone Numbers

WhatsApp is on the brink of resolving a major issue by introducing a new feature, prompting users to take action promptly to stay current. Traditionally, users have had to exchange phone numbers to chat on the platform, which isn’t always convenient. After a long wait, the Meta-owned app is addressing this inconvenience by rolling out unique usernames. Once this update is live, users will have the option to share their username instead of their phone number.

The rationale behind this change, as explained by WhatsApp, is that sharing a phone number can feel like a significant step, especially when connecting with new acquaintances like classmates, neighbors, event contacts, or group chat members. The new feature aims to provide users with the flexibility to chat without divulging their phone numbers.

Moreover, the update will enhance privacy in group conversations. Individuals entering community or social group chats can now participate without immediately exposing their phone numbers to strangers. To secure their preferred usernames in advance of the full launch, users are encouraged to make reservations promptly. Given the massive user base of the platform, popular usernames are likely to be claimed swiftly, so early reservations offer a better chance of securing the desired name without missing out.

To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. The feature will be rolled out gradually over the next few months, with WhatsApp notifying users when usernames become available in their respective regions.
