Shocking video footage captured the moment a wildfire engulfed a popular holiday destination, prompting more than 800 firefighters to battle the massive blaze. Tourists in the Alanya district of Antalya, Turkey, were forced to evacuate their hotels as the infernos raged. Social media videos depicted the terrifying scene of flames tearing through forested areas near a restaurant and potentially a holiday resort, leaving onlookers in disbelief.
The wildfire originated in the Kundu area near Antalya on Saturday evening, spreading rapidly due to strong winds into the neighboring regions of Mugla and Aydin. Local firefighters mobilized a substantial emergency response to contain the escalating flames.
Over 800 firefighters, along with 20 helicopters and 14 other aircraft, were deployed to combat the wildfires. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan labeled the situation a “truly great disaster,” with over 25,000 individuals participating in the emergency response efforts.
Alanya Deputy Mayor Murat Levent Koçak highlighted that the fire’s rapid spread was exacerbated by strong winds, cautioning residents about the approaching danger. He reassured the public that emergency services were actively working to extinguish the inferno.
Throughout the summer, Turkey has witnessed a series of devastating wildfires, forcing thousands of tourists and locals to flee. In July, more than 1,500 people evacuated from Bursa as flames encircled the area, necessitating the efforts of over 1,100 firefighters. Unprecedented temperatures, dry weather, and strong winds have contributed to the alarming frequency of wildfires in the region.
Not only Turkey but also neighboring countries like Greece and Bulgaria have grappled with severe wildfires this summer. Greece faced evacuations in parts of Athens after over 50 wildfires erupted within 24 hours in July. Bulgaria sought assistance from EU partners as fires ravaged its borders with Greece, Turkey, and Serbia.
