Zipcar, a car rental company, has revealed its intention to cease operations in the UK by the end of this year. The UK general manager, James Taylor, informed customers via email about the ongoing consultations and the temporary halt of bookings past December 31. Zipcar has initiated formal discussions with its UK staff regarding the proposed cessation of operations in the country.
Customers who have already reserved a car for Christmas will still be able to proceed with their booking. However, those with upcoming New Year bookings will be contacted by the company. Refunds will be provided to members with reservations beyond December 31, with the cancellation fee waived.
In his communication, Mr. Taylor stated the temporary suspension of bookings pending the consultation outcome, preventing new bookings beyond December 31, 2025. Although the UK operations are proposed to cease, customer accounts will remain active until a final decision is reached post-consultation, allowing the use of Zipcars until December 31, 2025.
Zipcar, an American company, provides hourly and extended rentals for cars and vans through a mobile app. Offering three membership plans – basic, smart, and plus – the company did not disclose the reason behind the sudden closure of its UK operations. While operations in the US will continue unaffected, customers must have US membership to utilize the services there.
As of the end of last year, the UK branch had 71 employees, with reported deepening losses of £5.7 million in 2024 due to reduced customer trips. Zipcar’s published accounts in October highlighted cost pressures from increasing electricity and insurance costs, market volatility, and revenue decline, attributing it to the cost-of-living crisis impacting demand for discretionary spending.
No reason was provided for the abrupt closure of Zipcar’s UK operations, with customers directed to continue using the service in the US with a US membership. The company faced financial challenges in 2024, leading to an increased loss and operational difficulties.
