Beloved Radio Host Honored After Crocodile Attack

Tributes are being honored for a beloved former radio host who went missing while fishing near a river infested with crocodiles.

Roman Butchaski, an experienced fishing enthusiast who hosted a radio program about fishing in Australia, disappeared near Oliva River in November 2023.

According to a coroner’s report, two crocodiles were sighted in the vicinity before Butchaski vanished, leading to the belief that he was attacked and consumed by one of these reptiles.

Coroner Christine Roney’s findings, released on July 30, suggest that Butchaski likely entered the water and fell victim to a crocodile due to the absence of any traces found during the thorough search.

Expressing condolences, radio host Ben Fordham mentioned the closure brought to Butchaski’s friends and family by these findings, acknowledging the difficulty of not knowing what had happened.

Michael Guest, co-host of The Outdoor and Fishing Show, concurred with the coroner’s conclusions, emphasizing the relief felt through the closure provided by the report.

A significant land and air search was conducted for the experienced radio presenter after he failed to return to his camp at Bramwell Station, leading to the discovery of his vehicle, fishing gear, and some personal belongings.

Reports from the time revealed that the area where Butchaski went missing, Cape York and the Olive River, is known for its crocodile presence, a factor taken into account by authorities during the search efforts.

Authorities, including Queensland Police, initiated search operations promptly after Butchaski’s disappearance was reported, deploying resources like helicopters and additional personnel to aid in the search.
