Michelle Tolley, a dedicated campaigner advocating for individuals affected by the NHS infected blood scandal, was recognized at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards. Alongside fellow campaigners, she received a Special Recognition Award last year.
During the awards ceremony, Michelle and other winners were surprised with the announcement that they had all won a cruise holiday from P&O Cruises, the new headline partner for the event. The unexpected gift came as a delightful moment for Michelle after years of health struggles and advocacy work.
Having contracted hepatitis C in 1987 after a blood transfusion, Michelle faced 28 years of health challenges before receiving a diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Determined to turn her anger into positive action, she established support groups, collaborated with organizations like the Hepatitis C Trust, and participated in the government inquiry.
The news of the cruise holiday came as a welcome respite for Michelle and her husband, who hadn’t traveled abroad since their wedding in 1984. They decided to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary by booking a Canary Islands cruise for May, with plans to renew their vows during the trip. P&O Cruises went the extra mile by organizing a vow renewal ceremony, complete with flowers, photographs, and special meals.
Embarking on the Ventura cruise ship, Michelle was overwhelmed by the experience, likening it to Christmas morning. She and her husband made the most of their time on board, enjoying the amenities, food, entertainment, and excursions to Madeira and the Canary Islands.
Their adventures ashore included exploring banana tree-filled landscapes in Madeira and taking a tuk-tuk tour in Las Palmas. In Lisbon, they enjoyed a coach and river cruise, soaking in the city views and landmarks along the River Tagus.
Impressed by the exceptional service and experiences on the cruise, Michelle and Dean are eager to embark on another voyage. Reflecting on their time aboard the Ventura, Michelle encourages others to try a cruise holiday, praising the facilities and friendly staff for making their trip memorable.
