A recent report by consumer group Which? has revealed that despite the popularity of the major mobile networks EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, they are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to smaller competitors. The report, based on a survey of over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, found that lesser-known networks are excelling in providing better value and superior customer service.
The survey aimed to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations and which ones are not. The results indicated that the traditional “Big Four” networks are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of customer satisfaction.
Among the top performers in the rankings were Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Interestingly, EE was the highest-ranked among the major providers, securing the ninth position, while O2 and Three were positioned among the lower-ranked networks.
One of the key findings of the report was the significant price difference between the Big Four networks and smaller providers. Customers on major networks paid an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, whereas users on smaller networks paid only £9 on average.
Despite the lower prices offered by smaller providers, the report highlighted that customers can still enjoy comparable coverage and service quality, as many smaller networks utilize the infrastructure of major networks. Switching between providers was also noted to be more straightforward than commonly perceived, with some customers able to switch networks in as little as 10 minutes.
A member of Which? shared their experience of leaving O2 due to a price increase and switching to a more affordable plan with SMARTY, saving around £200 annually. Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outperform larger mobile firms by offering better customer service and more cost-effective deals.
Hitchins encouraged customers unhappy with their current service or looking to save money to consider switching to a provider that offers better value. The rankings provided by Which? showcased the top-performing mobile networks, with Talkmobile leading at 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY.
