“Mother of Deceased Apprentice Demands Stricter Investigator Controls”

In a recent update provided 15 months following his passing, Debbie Duncan, the mother of Jay Slater, has urged for stricter controls on amateur investigators, as she and her family have been subjected to distressing conspiracy theories. Jay, an apprentice bricklayer, disappeared at the age of 19 during a trip to Tenerife with friends, triggering an extensive search that captured public attention. Sadly, his body was discovered in the Parque Rural de Teno nature reserve on July 15, 2024, not far from where his phone was last located.

The young man, who vanished after attending a music festival, sustained multiple injuries consistent with a fall from a height, resulting in what is believed to have been an instantaneous death. Despite the coroner’s ruling of accidental death at the inquest in July, Jay’s family faced online trolls spreading false information during their most challenging time.

Debbie, now 57, is advocating for Jay’s Law to prevent the dissemination of misinformation by untrained individuals regarding missing persons. Supported by her local MP, Sarah Smith, she is seeking assistance from Mirror readers to back her cause. Debbie shared her experiences ahead of the upcoming Channel 4 documentary, The Disappearance of Jay Slater, where she reveals poignant details about her son’s final moments.

The Mirror highlights some of the baseless conspiracy theories that have caused additional anguish to Debbie and her family as they grieve the loss of Jay. Despite the ongoing struggle to cope with Jay’s tragic death, Debbie has had to step down from her job and seek private counseling. Following Jay’s disappearance, his friend Lucy Law initiated a fundraising campaign that attracted support for the search efforts, although it faced unwarranted skepticism from some quarters, adding to the distress of loved ones.

Debbie cautioned online speculators about the consequences of their actions, emphasizing the impact of false rumors on her family and the importance of support in such distressing circumstances. Clarifying the purpose of the fundraising campaign, she assured that the family had approved it and would only access the funds as necessary. Funds raised would be used for Jay’s funeral arrangements and repatriation, as well as covering the costs incurred by those who assisted in the search efforts.

The Disappearance of Jay Slater is scheduled to air on Channel 4 on Sunday, September 28, at 9 pm. If you have a story to share, you can reach out via email at julia.banim@reachplc.com.
