Man Paralyzed in Ibiza Diving Tragedy; Fundraiser for Quadriplegic’s Treatment and Home

A man is now paralyzed following a tragic incident while on a family vacation in Ibiza. David Hayes, 37, was left with a broken spine after diving into the sea on the Spanish island, resulting in quadriplegia. His wife, Elly, who is battling cancer, now faces the challenge of caring for their children and managing their affairs while supporting David.

Despite emergency surgery in Spain to stabilize his neck using a titanium and artificial bone cylinder, medical professionals have stated that David will not regain movement. A fundraiser has been initiated to assist with the costs of treatment at the Salisbury Spinal Treatment Centre and adapting their home to accommodate David’s needs.

David and Elly are optimistic about potential advancements in medical science and intensive rehabilitation at the treatment center. David’s condition has seen some positive developments, including breathing independently for extended periods and improved ability to eat solid food.

David’s journey has been marked by challenges, including reliance on a ventilator, saltwater ingestion leading to complications, and the need for ongoing medical care at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. The fundraiser emphasizes Elly’s resilience and the need for constant care and home adaptations for David.

The fundraiser has received overwhelming support, nearing its target of £30,000. The funds will be utilized post-rehabilitation at the Salisbury Spinal Treatment Centre for further care, home modifications, and advanced wheelchair technologies.

Supporters are encouraged to donate to the cause to enhance David’s quality of life. The impact of contributions is highlighted, emphasizing the difference it will make in improving David’s well-being.
