A young girl named Beatrix Adamson-Archbold, who underwent a life-saving heart transplant, has garnered significant support for her initiative to promote organ donation education in schools, including a message from Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Beatrix, only four years old, spent over 15 months at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle awaiting her transplant. Her father, Terry, is advocating for organ donor awareness to be integrated into the national curriculum.
In a heartfelt gesture, Terry ensured that Beatrix’s letter reached Sir Keir, who expressed his endorsement for organ education, emphasizing the importance of understanding the science behind blood, tissue, and organs by the time students complete secondary school.
Terry, a 47-year-old police officer from Burnopfield, Co Durham, enlisted local Labour MP Liz Twist’s support in his campaign. He emphasized the value of discussing organ donation with Beatrix and detailed her thoughts in a letter to the Prime Minister.
In her letter to Sir Keir, Beatrix shared her personal experience, stating, “I have a special heart, I had a heart transplant, and it saved my life.” She highlighted the potential impact of educational programs on saving lives like hers.
Responding to Beatrix’s letter, Sir Keir empathized with her journey, commending her resilience and recovery post-transplant. He encouraged her aspirations to become a doctor and shared his favorite band, Orange Juice, in a light-hearted exchange.
Terry also urged the Government to incorporate organ donation as a mandatory component of the National Curriculum. He is supported by Beatrix’s mother, Cheryl Adamson, who works for the council. The family previously donated their daughter Isabel’s heart for medical research after her stillbirth in 2018.
The Mirror’s Change the Law for Life campaign led to the implementation of the opt-out system for organ donation in England in May 2020. The legislation, known as Max and Keira’s Law, was named after campaigner Max Johnson and his donor, Keira Ball. Keira’s father, Joe, chose to donate her organs, ultimately saving four lives. Under the new law, individuals in England are presumed donors unless they opt out, with the consent of their loved ones always considered in the donation process.
