An easyJet flight that landed on the Isle of Man was forced to return to Liverpool without allowing passengers to disembark due to safety concerns. The decision was made after it was deemed too windy for ground crews to safely connect the aircraft stairs, leading to the return trip back to Liverpool.
Passengers onboard the flight were notified of the situation around 5pm and were provided with water during the delay. Children were even given the opportunity to visit the cockpit while waiting for further instructions.
Isle of Man Airport issued an apology for the disruption caused by the strong winds. The airport explained that safety limits set by their ground handling provider, Menzies Aviation, prevented the deployment of aircraft steps under the challenging wind conditions.
Geoffrey Pugh, the airport’s interim director, expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the high winds, emphasizing the priority of safety in such circumstances. Both the airport and easyJet spokespersons reiterated that passenger safety and well-being were paramount, with easyJet offering rebooking options, refunds, accommodations, and meals to affected customers.
Menzies Aviation stressed their commitment to safety protocols, including weather-related precautions, highlighting that ground operations are only conducted when deemed safe. The inconvenience caused was acknowledged, with appreciation extended to the patience of those impacted by the situation.
