Simultaneously, they are experimenting with various cover crops to determine the most effective weed suppression methods, aiming to reduce herbicide usage.
Jay Cory, a farmer and chair of the Lakeland Agricultural Research Association (LARA), emphasized the value of research in sparking new ideas and insights for farmers. LARA, a non-profit dedicated to agricultural research in northeastern Alberta, conducts its studies at the Fort Kent research field, situated about 250 kilometers northeast of Edmonton between Bonnyville and Cold Lake.
Area producers recently toured the facility to observe the 10 ongoing trials focused on enhancing productivity and sustainability through research on crop varieties and farming practices.
Maria Angelica Ouellette, a research scientist at LARA, highlighted the organization’s commitment to testing concepts under real-world conditions, considering factors like precipitation and temperature fluctuations. Farmers’ inquiries in the region directly influence the research agenda, aiming to help growers achieve sustainable and productive land use.
This year’s research faces challenges posed by excessively wet weather, impacting crop performance. The program’s producer-led approach ensures that research aligns with local needs and insights from experienced landowners, enhancing the relevance and practicality of the studies.
