Canada’s women’s flag football team emerged victorious over the United States in the global championship at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championships in Düsseldorf, Germany. Meanwhile, the men’s team secured a spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The women’s team, having secured their place with a 20-6 win over Mexico in the semifinals, concluded a flawless tournament with a 27-20 triumph over the Americans in the final.
Frederique Morneau made three touchdown catches for Canada, with quarterback Sara Parker connecting with Caroline Moquin-Joubert for another score. Parker, with a total of 23 touchdown passes, was honored as the most valuable player of the women’s competition.
In the men’s category, Canada earned their ticket to the 2028 Games by defeating Mexico 34-26 in the third-place match. Quarterback Michael O’Connor led the team with 294 yards and five touchdowns. Antony Auclair, a former NFL tight end, contributed 149 receiving yards and caught two of O’Connor’s touchdown passes. Daniel Petermann scored twice, while James Drysdale added another touchdown.
Both Canadian teams will be heading to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles after their successful performances. The top two teams from each flag event, excluding the host nation, secured their places for the Olympic debut of flag football in Los Angeles. Canada’s head coach, Paul LaPolice, expressed pride in the teams’ achievements, emphasizing the hard work and dedication that led to their success.
The United States emerged victorious in the men’s final against Italy with a score of 42-26, showcasing the competitive spirit of the tournament.
