Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, sitting at the bottom of the league, pulled off a surprising 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Rapid, who lead the league, in a Northern Super League match at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 about 13 minutes later. Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the net in the 38th minute, with Melanie Forbes equalizing at 2-2 just before halftime.
Thurton added her second goal just before the break, securing the lead for the Wild, who never relinquished it. Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, bringing their record to two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, now with 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, seeing their 10-match unbeaten streak come to an end.
Despite having 54% possession, the Rapid were outshot 16-13 (9-6 on target). The Wild earned six of the 11 corners in the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In a separate match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the game and then struck again five minutes into stoppage time to lead the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 triumph over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had given the Tides a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. The Rise controlled 56% of possession and outshot the Tides 18-13, including 6-4 on target.
Halifax took four of the six corners, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued during the game.
