Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse secured a spot in the Diamond League Final with a solid performance in the 200 meters at the Weltklasse Zürich meet. Despite not achieving his fastest time of the season, De Grasse finished in 20.03 seconds, coming in behind Kenny Bednarek of the United States and South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile.
De Grasse’s last 200-meter race was at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet in Zagreb, Croatia, where he won with a time of 19.95. The Markham, Ont., athlete had a successful start to the 2026 season with a victory in 19.84 at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix but placed fifth at the Rabat Diamond League in Morocco on May 31.
At 31 years old, De Grasse holds the Canadian record of 19.62 seconds from his Olympic victory in Tokyo in 2021. His notable achievements include becoming Canada’s first Diamond League Trophy recipient in 2023.
Heading into the upcoming Diamond League Final in Brussels, the men’s 200-meter field will feature top athletes like Dambile, Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, Bednarek, Makanakaishe Charamba of Zimbabwe, and others.
The competition also saw record-breaking performances in the hurdles, with Alison dos Santos setting a new world record in the men’s 400m hurdles and Masai Russell achieving a world record in the women’s 100m hurdles. The pole vault event witnessed a thrilling battle between Mondo Duplantis and Emmanouil Karalis, setting the stage for exciting showdowns in the upcoming finals.
