“Run Terry Run” Documentary Reveals Untold Terry Fox Story

A new documentary titled “Run Terry Run” sheds light on lesser-known aspects of Terry Fox, a prominent figure in Canadian history renowned for his 1980 cross-country run to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. Directed by Sean Menard and unveiled at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film unveils previously unreleased footage capturing Fox’s personality, determination, and struggles.

Menard, known for his work on the self-funded MuchMusic documentary “299 Queen Street West,” undertook the project to unearth firsthand accounts of Fox’s marathon due to the scarcity of high-quality footage. Assisted by the Terry Fox Foundation, he unearthed 96 reels of unseen footage stored in Toronto, which he restored to 4K quality for the documentary.

The film delves into several revelations about Fox, including his ambitious goal of running 8,000 kilometers from St. John’s to Victoria, covering approximately 42 kilometers daily. Despite not reaching his destination due to health setbacks, Fox’s journey sparked a nationwide movement for cancer research.

Fox’s relationship dynamics, particularly with his best friend Doug Alward and younger brother Darrell Fox, are highlighted in the documentary. It showcases Fox’s frustrations with media coverage, his dedication to fundraising solely for cancer research, and his struggles with wearing a prosthetic leg during the run.

The documentary also touches on Fox’s belief that a car accident contributed to his cancer, his inspiration drawn from young cancer patients, and his discomfort with medical appointments. It mentions the challenges he faced in Quebec and Ontario, and his ability to maintain a playful demeanor amidst his serious mission.

The legacy of Terry Fox, who passed away at the age of 22, continues to inspire through annual Terry Fox runs that have raised over $1 billion for cancer research. His story serves as a testament to perseverance and selflessness, emphasizing that ordinary individuals can achieve extraordinary feats. “Run Terry Run” is set to premiere in theaters on October 9.
