“Fatal Accidents Prompt Safety Concerns on Highway 627”

A recent tragic accident on Highway 627 near Edmonton has sparked concerns among local residents about the need for enhanced safety measures. The incident, which occurred early Thursday morning, involved a collision between a pickup truck and a 69-year-old motorcyclist on Highway 627, between Range Road 273 and Range Road 274. This marks the fourth fatal crash on this stretch of road in Parkland County within the past year.

According to Parkland RCMP, there have been a total of 38 reported accidents on Highway 627 in the last year, with five fatalities resulting from four of those collisions. Robert Oliver, a longtime resident living near Highway 627, highlighted the dangers posed by multiple intersections along the highway, citing the absence of advanced green lights and speeding motorists as key factors contributing to the high accident rate.

Expressing his concerns for the safety of his family and other road users, Oliver reached out to the Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridors to advocate for the installation of advanced green lights at the Highway 627 and Highway 60 intersection. In a previous incident on July 16, a collision at the same intersection claimed the lives of a 69-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman from Stony Plain.

Enforcement authorities, including Parkland RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs Highway Patrol, have noted an uptick in fatal collisions on Highway 627 compared to previous years. In response, increased enforcement actions will be implemented along the highway to address the rising number and severity of accidents.

Highway 627 falls under the jurisdiction of Alberta Transportation, which is collaborating with law enforcement agencies to investigate the recent incidents and explore potential safety enhancements for the highway and its intersections. A ministry spokesperson conveyed condolences to those affected by the collisions and assured a thorough review of RCMP findings to identify additional safety measures for the highway.
