Actor RJ Mitte, known for his role in the TV series “Breaking Bad” and his advocacy for disability rights, passed away at the age of 34, as confirmed by authorities and his representatives on Monday. The Cameron County Justice of the Peace, Cyndi Hinojosa, stated that Mitte was pronounced dead around 1:30 p.m. at his presumed residence in Brownsville, Texas. The cause of death remains undisclosed pending an autopsy.
Mitte portrayed Walter White Jr., the son of Bryan Cranston’s character, on the popular AMC show throughout its five-season run. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age, Mitte shared in a 2014 interview that his personal experiences with disability, physical therapy, family challenges, and medical expenses mirrored the themes explored in the series, enhancing his performance.
Hailing from Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte ventured into acting in 2006 upon relocating to Los Angeles, securing minor roles in sitcoms before landing his breakthrough role on “Breaking Bad” in 2007, playing a pivotal part until the show concluded in 2013.
Acknowledging his impact, Mitte’s representatives highlighted his commitment to disability awareness and inclusivity, leveraging his platform to challenge stereotypes and advocate for representation. Colleague Bryan Cranston fondly remembered Mitte as a talented actor who infused energy and authenticity into his character, expressing his admiration for their enduring friendship beyond the show.
Mitte’s acting portfolio extended to projects like the ABC Family series “Switched at Birth” and the superhero parody “Guardians of Justice,” while also venturing into film production. Beyond his on-screen endeavors, Mitte actively championed causes related to cerebral palsy, serving as an ambassador for organizations such as United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, in addition to leading his own charitable initiative, the Mitte Foundation, dedicated to supporting disability-related community programs.
