Users of various devices, especially Samsung models, have encountered significant screen flickering issues while using the Gmail app, causing text to disappear or display as blank white boxes. This problem has sparked frustration among Gmail enthusiasts, leading them to voice their concerns on social media platforms. One user, Jeremiah, expressed his dissatisfaction on X, calling out for improvements for folding phones like the Samsung Fold affected by continuous screen flickering for four days.
Similar grievances have surfaced on Google’s support forums, with users struggling to read emails due to persistent screen flickering despite attempting various troubleshooting methods like force-stopping the app, clearing the cache, and device restarts. Google’s product expert Kimiya Kitani identified Android System WebView as the likely culprit behind the issue, affecting the display of web content within apps on certain devices, notably Samsung tablets.
Kitani acknowledged that intermittent problems with Android System WebView have been reported on devices like Samsung tablets, prompting Google to investigate the issue further. While the exact number of impacted users remains uncertain, reports indicate that Samsung foldable devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold series and specific Galaxy tablets are among the most affected.
As a temporary solution, Kitani recommended rotating the device to mitigate screen flickering. By opening emails in portrait mode, rotating the device to landscape mode until the screen stabilizes, and then switching back to portrait mode, users may alleviate the flickering problem while awaiting a permanent fix from Google.
In the meantime, rotating the device as suggested may offer a quick workaround for affected users until Google releases a lasting solution to address the screen flickering issue.
