Renowned actor and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Robert Redford passed away at 89 in his Utah residence. The Hollywood legend peacefully died in his sleep early Tuesday morning. His demise follows his recent return to television after a six-year hiatus, with a cameo in the AMC show Dark Winds earlier this year.
Redford, who also served as an executive producer on Dark Winds alongside author George R. R. Martin, made a guest appearance with Martin in the show’s Season 3 premiere. The pair portrayed prison inmates engaged in a chess match, where Martin’s character triumphed over Redford’s character, aided by the lead character, Navajo tribal police officer Joe Leaphorn.
The scene featuring Redford and Martin was filmed on a closed set, as per Redford’s request. The show revolves around Navajo police officers in the 1970s. Director Chris Eyre shared that the idea for their cameos had been discussed since the show’s inception, expressing nervousness at directing Redford.
Before his appearance on Dark Winds, Redford’s last onscreen role was in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Notably, Redford had announced his retirement before his film The Old Man & The Gun in 2018 but later admitted it was a mistake.
Apart from his acting career, Redford was known for directing acclaimed films like Ordinary People and founding the Sundance Film Festival in Utah in 1978. A statement from his publicist confirmed his passing at his beloved Utah residence.
Tributes have poured in for Redford, celebrated for his roles in iconic films such as Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid. Fans have taken to social media to honor his legacy, reminiscing about his contributions to cinema and indie filmmaking.
