A deputy headteacher has been permanently barred from teaching after a disciplinary hearing found her guilty of sending inappropriate messages of a sexual nature to a minor. Laura Hamblin, a 40-year-old English teacher and safeguarding lead, was apprehended by authorities in March 2024 for suspected sexual communication with a child.
Over the course of eight days in March 2024, Hamblin used WhatsApp to send explicit messages and voice notes to a vulnerable child. Following her arrest, she received a suspended sentence, a sexual harm prevention order, and a decade-long registration on the sex offenders’ list.
An official panel from the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) convened recently and unanimously decided to prohibit her from teaching indefinitely. The panel learned that Hamblin had resigned from her position the previous September.
During the hearing, it was revealed that there were approximately 1,500 pages of inappropriate chat exchanges between Hamblin and the child, which were deemed harmful by the judge. The conversation escalated to flirtatious and ultimately explicit sexual content.
The TRA panel ruled that Hamblin had severely violated the expected standards of a teacher and abused her position of trust. The judge also noted that Hamblin had instructed the child to delete the messages, indicating an attempt to conceal the misconduct.
In sentencing remarks, the judge emphasized the breach of trust and highlighted the significant impact on the student, including disruption to education and the loss of a respected teacher. The panel decided against setting a review period in this case.
A spokesperson from Hamblin’s former school emphasized the institution’s commitment to student safety, stating that the well-being of students and staff is paramount. Upon learning of the allegations, the school promptly suspended Hamblin and cooperated fully with law enforcement.
