“Melbourne woman admits to throwing newborn out window”

A woman has admitted guilt in the case where she allegedly threw a newborn baby out of a window using a plastic bag. The incident occurred around 2:40 am on August 30, 2024, resulting in severe injuries to the infant outside a residence. The 25-year-old suspect was promptly apprehended by the authorities.

While the police have not confirmed the woman’s relationship to the baby, she has been identified as Irine Jerotich, 26, by the Australian Associated Press (AAP). Appearing briefly in Melbourne Magistrates Court on September 15, Jerotich faced allegations of endangering life through reckless conduct.

The distressing event transpired in Dandenong North, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Jerotich, without speaking in court, acknowledged her guilt to the single charge. Specific details of the incident were not disclosed during the court appearance.

Previous charges indicated that the woman placed the newborn in a plastic bag before throwing the baby out of a bathroom window onto the concrete, as reported by local sources. The act endangered the unnamed infant’s life, according to the AAP. The timeline of the offense was between August 29 and 30 of the previous year.

In a statement last September, police mentioned that the woman had been charged with endangering life and causing injury recklessly, with the latter charge later dropped. Jerotich is currently out on bail, restricted from leaving Victoria and mandated to remain at her residence until the matter goes to a pre-sentence hearing in the County Court of Victoria in February.

Housemates of the woman, unnamed at the time, expressed surprise that she was pregnant, as they were unaware of her condition. One individual recounted waking up to the incident and calling emergency services for help.

The woman’s housemate conveyed relief that the baby was safe and expressed readiness to support her upon her release from the hospital. Victoria Police had previously confirmed that the charged woman was hospitalized following the incident.
