NATO has issued a strong warning to Russia, stating that it will use all necessary military means to protect itself after three Russian fighter jets trespassed into Estonia’s airspace in a recent provocative move.
Estonia reacted by calling in a high-ranking Russian official to express their objections to the unauthorized entry of three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets into Estonian airspace on Friday. The Russian aircraft reportedly flew over the Vaindloo Island region and remained in Estonian airspace for approximately 12 minutes.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte emphasized, “We are prepared to defend every inch of NATO territory and will not tolerate such risky actions from Russia. We are willing to take down a fighter jet if required.”
A meeting of the NATO North Atlantic Council was convened promptly after the incident to denounce Russia’s infringement of Estonian airspace on September 19. NATO’s response was described as swift and resolute, with allied aircraft scrambled to intercept and escort the intruding jets out of Estonian airspace.
The statement from NATO insisted that these provocations must cease, or Russia will face the consequences. The incident was deemed part of a broader trend of increasingly reckless Russian behavior.
NATO affirmed its commitment to using both military and non-military measures to defend against Russia’s actions. The alliance emphasized that its response to Russia’s irresponsible behavior will remain firm and unwavering.
Furthermore, NATO reiterated its support for Ukraine and underlined that it will not be intimidated by Russia’s actions. The incident involving the Russian jets crossing into Estonian territory near Vaindloo Island prompted Italian F-35 jets, part of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing Mission, to intercept the intruding aircraft.
Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna condemned the incident as audacious, highlighting that Russia had violated Estonian airspace four times this year, but never on such a significant scale.
The NATO statement followed Estonia’s request for formal consultations under Article 4, which mandates a meeting whenever a member of the alliance perceives a threat to its territorial integrity, political independence, or security.
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk declared that Poland would take immediate action to shoot down any flying objects violating its territory without hesitation.
