Sasha East, the CEO of Oxford Gatehouse, mentioned that even full-time employees visit for meals because they struggle to afford food after covering their expenses. Contrary to common assumptions, not all individuals utilizing homeless services have addiction issues. Some Oxford University academics have sought help just to meet their basic nutritional needs.
The homelessness situation in Oxford has worsened, with a significant increase in rough sleeping cases over the past year. This surge is attributed to the cost-of-living crisis and the challenging rental market in Oxford. Charity workers emphasize the urgency of the situation, stating that many individuals are on the verge of financial collapse.
The upcoming Oxford CEO Sleepout event on October 9 at University Parks aims to raise essential funds for the homeless community. Ms. East stressed the critical role of fundraising events like the CEO Sleepout in meeting the escalating demand for support services.
CEO Sleepout, which originated more than a decade ago in the North East, has raised £5.5 million nationally to support various charitable causes. Business leaders participate by spending a night outdoors to raise awareness and funds. The charity plans to host a record number of events across the UK this year to address the growing homelessness crisis.
