Royal Family Gathers for Duchess of Kent’s Funeral

Key members of the royal family, including Princess Kate and Prince William, are set to come together to pay tribute to the life of the Duchess of Kent as her funeral is held today.

The Duchess, who was the wife of Queen Elizabeth II’s cousin, will be laid to rest this afternoon after her coffin was transported from Kensington Palace to Westminster Cathedral. Her husband, visibly saddened, watched as her body was transferred from the royal hearse into the cathedral for traditional Catholic rites and a vigil.

Today’s funeral at Westminster Cathedral will see the presence of King Charles and Queen Camilla, along with other members of the Royal Family. This marks a significant occasion as it is the first time in 400 years that a British monarch is attending a Catholic funeral.

Katharine, Duchess of Kent, passed away at the age of 92 on September 4. She was known for her independent spirit within the House of Windsor, choosing to lead her own path even after stepping back from official royal duties following years of representing the crown.

Upon marrying Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, a cousin to the Queen, in 1961, the Duchess became a prominent figure in the Royal Family. Despite facing personal challenges, she remained dedicated to supporting the monarchy and fulfilling her royal commitments.

The Duke and Duchess of Kent had three children: George, the Earl of St Andrews, Lady Helen Taylor, and Lord Nicholas Windsor. Tragically, the Duchess experienced two heartbreaking losses in her pregnancies, which deeply affected her.

In her later years, she found solace in music, converting to Catholicism in 1994 and eventually stepping back from royal duties to focus on her passion for music. She led a discreet double life, working part-time as a music teacher at a primary school in Hull, where she inspired and uplifted her students through the joy of music.

Remembered for her empathy and dedication, the Duchess relinquished her HRH title in 2002 to pursue charitable causes that were close to her heart. Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched during her time as a teacher and royal figure.
