“The Assembly” Season 2: Neurodivergent Interviewers Take the Lead

CBC’s reality show, “The Assembly,” is set to premiere its second season featuring six fresh celebrity interviews and a larger ensemble of over 30 neurodivergent and autistic adults posing the questions. Notable figures such as Hudson Williams (“Heated Rivalry”), Zach Galifianakis (“The Hangover”), and Jay Baruchel (“This is the End”) will be among the guests facing the inquisitive group.

The upcoming season will showcase interviews with figures like actor and Miss Universe Canada Ashley Callingbull, singer-songwriter Lights, and three-time Olympic hockey gold medalist Marie-Philip Poulin. Each celebrity undergoes an unrestricted interview where they tackle unexpected and personal questions, moving beyond the typical promotional rhetoric.

The show’s appeal lies in its mix of returning and new interviewers, fostering genuine exchanges, humor, and moments of connection rather than scripted interactions. “The Assembly” draws inspiration from the French program “Les Rencontres du Papotin,” which debuted in 2022 featuring guests like “Killing Eve” star Camille Cottin and French President Emmanuel Macron before expanding globally with appearances from actors Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, David Tennant, and Stephen Fry.

The first season of “The Assembly” received accolades including a Canadian Screen Award for best direction, three Telly Awards, a Golden Sheaf Award at the Yorkton Film Festival, and a Banff Rockie Award nomination. Executive producer Stephen Sawchuk promises an abundance of heart, humor, and genuine discussions in the upcoming season, emphasizing the show’s focus on human connection resonating with audiences. Vancouver-based Small Army Entertainment produces the series, with the second season scheduled to premiere on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 9 p.m. ET on CBC TV and CBC Gem. Viewers can also access extended “producer’s cuts” exclusively on CBC Gem starting at 9 a.m. ET on the same day.
