US President Donald Trump has stirred controversy once again with baseless remarks about London’s Labour Mayor, Sir Sadiq Khan. Trump, known for his criticism of the left-leaning Khan, delivered what critics have labeled as a prejudiced attack during a speech at the UN General Assembly.
During his UN address, the 79-year-old president, fresh from a UK state visit, made several questionable statements on topics like climate change and immigration, including a claim of ending seven wars. However, it was his targeting of Sir Sadiq that drew significant attention in the UK.
In a widely condemned outburst, Trump insinuated that Khan desired to implement Sharia law in London. The President’s comments, rejected by parliament members, accused Khan of seeking Sharia law adoption. Trump also criticized London’s immigration policies and clean energy initiatives, predicting negative outcomes for Western Europe.
Sharia, translating to “the clear path to water” in Arabic, denotes the Islamic way of life based on the Quran and Prophet Muhammad’s teachings. As London’s first Muslim mayor, former human rights lawyer Khan has faced unfounded allegations and right-wing conspiracies. There is no evidence supporting claims that Khan aims to enforce Sharia law in London.
Responding to Trump’s attacks, Khan labeled the President as racist, sexist, and Islamophobic. Khan humorously remarked that he seemed to inhabit Trump’s thoughts rent-free and joked about receiving an invoice for his stay. Trump’s accusation of Khan being a terrible mayor was refuted by a record influx of American visitors to London, emphasizing the city’s cultural, economic, and diverse appeal.
Trump’s history of criticizing Khan dates back to 2015, stemming from Khan’s condemnation of Trump’s proposed Muslim entry ban. Public figures like Secretary of State Pat McFadden and Health Secretary Wes Streeting have defended Khan against Trump’s Sharia law claims, highlighting London’s adherence to British law.
