Vladimir Putin has experienced a significant loss of 18 high-ranking military officials, including four colonels, who tragically perished in a fire at their command post during a Ukrainian sabotage mission.
Among the casualties was Colonel Ilya Makhotin, 45, the deputy chief of staff for the Rocket Forces and Artillery Department of the 35th Combined Arms Army. The incident is believed to have been a coordinated effort by Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence and undercover operatives.
Reports from the ‘I want to Live’ Ukrainian state Telegram channel indicate that the fire was initiated near Putin’s 35th Combined Arms Army command post in the occupied Zaporizhzhia region, quickly engulfing the premises and trapping the operational staff inside due to smoke and carbon monoxide.
Efforts to rescue the officers were hindered, resulting in the recovery of 13 bodies while four others, including intelligence chief Lt-Col Sergey Konoyko, could not be retrieved. The casualties also included Lt-Col Dmitry Pashabekov and Lt-Col Ruslan Shigabutdinov, alongside six army majors.
The devastating incident occurred on August 30 but details have only recently come to light, including the funeral arrangements for two of the deceased colonels. Ukrainian sources have described the operation as a successful collaboration between the GUR and the Mariupol Resistance.
In a separate development, Ukraine dealt a severe blow to Russia by launching long-distance drone strikes on the Gazprom Neftekhim plant in Salavat, Bashkortostan region, resulting in significant damage. This attack, along with another on an oil refinery in the Volgograd region, has disrupted a quarter of Russia’s oil production, impacting supplies for the armed forces and leading to fuel shortages and price increases.
Amid escalating tensions, the Russian government accused NATO countries of being engaged in a conflict with Russia over Ukraine, citing alleged support for the Kyiv regime. This accusation has heightened hostilities between Eastern European allies of NATO and Russia, with recent incidents involving the downing of Russian drones over Polish airspace.
The incursions prompted diplomatic protests from countries like Romania and the UK, condemning Russia’s actions as violations of sovereignty and airspace integrity. The situation has raised concerns about the potential for a direct military confrontation, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions.
