The union representing WestJet cabin crew has disclosed specifics of the tentative agreement reached with the Calgary-based airline this week following a one-day strike. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has announced that the agreement entails an increase of more than 18% in wages over three years, along with the introduction of a new “duty period premium” to provide compensation for ground duties. Additionally, the deal includes extended time off, elevated food and uniform allowances, and other benefits.
During a long holiday weekend for many, all WestJet flights across a significant portion of Canada were suspended as 4,400 flight attendants prepared to strike, resulting in a grounding of operations early Sunday. However, a tentative agreement was reached between the air carrier and the union on Monday, gradually restoring WestJet’s operations back to normal.
Cabin crew members are scheduled to vote on the agreement in the upcoming weeks.
