Yukon Union Trusteeship: Town Hall Addresses Concerns

After the largest union in the Yukon was placed under trusteeship, representatives from its parent organization conducted a virtual town hall to provide clarity and address concerns for the members. The newly appointed trustee and administrator, Josée-Anne Spirito and Chris Aylward, both hail from the Yukon Employees’ Union (YEU) parent body, the Public Service Alliance of Canada.

The Public Service Alliance assumed control of the YEU after notifying members that the Yukon union’s bylaws were suspended, leading to the removal of the president, vice-president, and directors from their positions. Spirito emphasized that the decision to place the YEU under trusteeship was a weighty one, emphasizing that it was not due to any individual’s actions or financial misconduct.

Aylward’s salary is supported by YEU, while her role is funded by PSAC. Aylward shared that despite some progress, obstacles arose in late May to early June, hindering further advancements due to constant questioning and resistance from executive members. This dysfunction ultimately led to the recommendation for trusteeship.

Aylward expressed optimism in rebuilding the YEU under the trusteeship, but not all members were convinced. Jessica McIntyre articulated that the ousted executive members were merely seeking clarification and asking necessary questions during the administration.

To address the leadership vacuum, a convention for selecting new leaders was planned for October. However, Spirito disclosed that several locals had not submitted delegates, leaving over 50 seats vacant. Efforts are underway to ensure adequate representation for the upcoming event.

Spirito stressed the importance of transparency and member engagement by conducting town halls throughout the trusteeship period. She also assured members that bargaining efforts would proceed without hindrance, with a commitment to securing a favorable deal for YEU members at the negotiation table.
