One of the largest oil refineries in the UK faces a severe threat of a significant explosion that could result in fatalities and extensive damage to the surrounding region, according to a trade union alert.
The Lindsey Oil Refinery, located in north Lincolnshire, was shut down recently following the administration of its owner, the Prax Group, endangering hundreds of jobs. Unite’s general secretary, Sharon Graham, has reached out to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband to express serious concerns about the safety of crucial employees at the refinery.
In a leaked letter to the Mirror, Graham emphasized the urgent need for additional safety measures at the Lindsey Oil Refinery to prevent a potential major accident. The union stressed the government’s responsibility in safeguarding the lives of workers, as well as protecting the neighboring P66 refinery and the local community from any possible disasters similar to past refinery explosions.
Described as a “top tier” site under the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations, the Lindsey Oil Refinery is deemed to be in a precarious position by Unite, as key personnel are reportedly departing for more stable job opportunities. Concerns were raised regarding the inadequacy of the financial retention package offered to retain essential staff during the transition phase and sale process of the site.
Graham highlighted the alarming consequences that could arise due to potential negligence, underscoring the importance of allocating adequate resources to ensure worker retention and safety. The Official Receiver overseeing the refinery’s operations affirmed their commitment to prioritizing safety in collaboration with management and regulatory authorities.
Following the financial troubles of its former owner, the Prax Lindsey Oil Refinery is under the control of the official receiver, with assets frozen amid legal disputes. The facility, supporting a significant workforce directly and through contracts, plays a vital role in the local and national economy, as emphasized by the union in urging a focus on job preservation during the sale process.
The looming closure of the Lindsey Oil Refinery, if not averted, would mark another blow to the UK’s refining industry and critical infrastructure, potentially leading to increased fuel imports and environmental concerns.
