Renowned Indian Actor Nana Patekar Dies at 75

Nana Patekar, a renowned Indian actor and filmmaker, passed away on Thursday at his residence in Goa, a state in western India. He was 75 years old. The Press Trust of India news agency reported that Patekar suffered a suspected heart attack, according to a doctor at the hospital where he was declared deceased.

Born as Vishwanath Patekar in 1951 in Maharashtra, a state in western India, he established a successful career in Hindi and Marathi cinema that spanned almost five decades. Patekar was known for his powerful performances, often portraying intricate and unconventional characters.

He made his debut in the 1978 Hindi movie “Gaman” and later gained recognition for his roles in “Parinda” and “Krantiveer.” His international acclaim expanded in 1988 with Mira Nair’s Oscar-nominated film “Salaam Bombay!”

Over his career, Patekar received three National Film Awards, the highest film accolades in India, and was honored with the Padma Shri, one of the country’s most prestigious civilian awards.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over Patekar’s demise, lauding his unique acting style and impactful presence on screen. Modi praised Patekar for his versatility and creativity in portraying memorable characters that will be cherished for years to come.

Nana Patekar is survived by his wife and a son.
